Local Manufacturing Companies Receive Funding for Skills Development
This morning, Peterborough Economic Development and the Kawartha Manufacturers’ Association were pleased to present local businesses with over $48,000 in funding for training and skills development. This funding has been made available through the Eastern Ontario CFDC Network and the Eastern Ontario Manufacturing Skills and Jobs Initiative through the Eastern Ontario Development Program (EODP) Collaborative Projects stream.

This initiative supports labour skills development to assist companies in achieving global manufacturing competitiveness. The funds are used to offset 50 percent of the training costs, matched by employers, with the intent of improving employees’ technical and soft skills.
The Eastern Ontario Manufacturing Skills and Jobs Initiative involves stakeholders from economic development, municipalities, education and the manufacturing sector collaborating to enhance the competitiveness of the Eastern Ontario manufacturing sector.
Since this funding was first made available in 2014, Peterborough Economic Development (PED) and the Kawartha Manufacturers’ Association (KMA) have connected 20 companies with over $200,000 in funding. Funding applications for the regions of Peterborough (City & County), City of Kawartha Lakes, Haliburton and South Lake are coordinated by PED and the KMA.
BACKGROUND
• Peterborough Economic Development proudly provides the administrative support for the Kawartha Manufacturers’ Association, to coordinate events, funding and member services.
• The Kawartha Manufacturers’ Association is a volunteer group of manufacturers dedicated to increasing the competitiveness and competencies of manufacturers in the Kawarthas.
The Eastern Ontario Development Program is a $48-million economic development initiative focused on addressing economic challenges in eastern Ontario and taking advantage of innovative opportunities in the region. The program is managed by the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario) and delivered through eastern Ontario’s 15 Community Futures Development Corporations (CFDCs) and the Eastern Ontario Community Futures Development Corporation Network Inc. Applications are solicited by each CFDC and the Network and are assessed on their potential to stimulate local and regional economic development and create jobs. The EODP Collaborative Projects stream, which is delivered by the Eastern Ontario CFDC Network, provides 50 percent matching funds for eligible initiatives that demonstrate broad support from the region and/or various partners, and offer sustainable, measurable, economic benefits to the regional economy.
The Eastern Ontario CFDC Network strategically administers and coordinates opportunities available to the fifteen Community Futures Development Corporations (CFDCs) in eastern Ontario and advocates on behalf of the membership in order to support regional and local economic development initiatives in eastern Ontario. The Eastern Ontario CFDC Network also administers the Southern Ontario Fund for Investment in Innovation (SOFII).
