With over 16 years of experience as a chiropractor, Dr. Ange Wellman knew she wanted to make a change. For Dr. Wellman, her experience as a mother and as a chiropractor led her to the downtown Peterborough core for the opening of her own clinic – the Wellman Clinic.

“I became a chiropractor because I love the way this type of treatment can address both health promotion and prevention for almost everybody,” says Dr. Wellman. “While all of us could do more to protect and nourish our spine health, I felt like there was a gap in treatment for busy, stressed-out moms and their children. Addressing spine health and the health of our central nervous system is not something we should only be thinking about when we’re in pain; it’s a critical part of maintaining a balanced and healthy life.”

Inspired by her 98-year-old grandmother, a former nurse who still resides right here in Peterborough, Dr. Wellman always knew she was a healer. However, when she became a mother herself 10 years ago she began to really understand the impact of the stresses and strains brought on by parenthood. This shift, she says, has helped to focus and guide her chiropractic practice ever since.

As a mother of two young daughters, Dr. Wellman helps her patients to understand the underlying lifestyle factors that may be contributing to a poor relationship between the spine and the central nervous system. “Being a mom is hard, and this overwhelming feeling of busy-ness that we’ve become accustomed to can really do harm to our bodies over time,” explains Dr. Wellman. “Through the Wellman Clinic, I wanted to create a safe space for mothers to acknowledge these feelings and take steps to help improve their alignment and overall health through chiropractic care.”

After moving back to Peterborough from Squamish, BC, Dr. Wellman began seeing local clients through Core Chiropractic. In January 2020, she was ready to step out on her own and began renovations on her very own clinic, the Wellman Clinic, however, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, delays in construction put the timeline of the clinic back by several months. On December 1st 2020, the Wellman Clinic opened its doors and began accepting new patients.

The Wellman Clinic specializes in pediatric and prenatal chiropractic with an emphasis on women’s health. This method of specific and gentle chiropractic adjustments, combined with a personalized lifestyle approach, helps families take control of their health and manage the stresses of everyday life.

As part of her practice, Dr. Wellman focuses strongly on pediatric chiropractic care through safe and gentle methods. “This is not the scary cracking type of chiropractic care that many people are afraid of,” says Dr. Wellman. “Our method is safe for children and adults since we focus primarily on preventive care and lifestyle support.”

Dr. Wellman graduated with her Doctor of Chiropractic from the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College in 2004 and continued her practice through a number of specialized training and certificates including  Pediatric training from the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association, Wellness Coaching certification from the Wellness Inventory program and Advanced Mind-Body training program with the Center for Mind-Body Medicine.

“For almost 16 years of my practice, it never felt like it was the right time to step out and create a clinic on my own,” says Dr. Wellman. “But now with my girls being a little bit older, I felt ready to take on this new challenge. My experiences both as a Mom and as a chiropractor really has helped me to create a clinic where mothers and their children can receive quality care for their specific needs.

“Particularly for my pediatric clients, I focus strongly on prevention and care for their developing spines. It is more beneficial to correct problems in childhood than to fix a broken adult,” says Dr. Wellman.

For Dr. Wellman, placing intent behind everything she does is an important element of the Wellman Clinic. “In my practice, I strive to create a safe and non-judgemental space,” says Dr. Wellman. “Many people don’t realize the profound impact spinal health can have on your overall health, wellbeing and happiness. So while I am there to help address these concerns, I want my patients to feel heard above all else.”

When asked about what prompted her to move back to Peterborough, Dr. Wellman explains more about her love for this area and her appreciation for this community. She also acknowledges the role Peterborough Economic Development has played in supporting small business owners, including herself, through these difficult times.

“Originally we moved back to Peterborough to be closer to family and to set down roots,” says Dr. Wellman. “What I didn’t anticipate was the strong sense of community between fellow entrepreneurs here in Peterborough. I love how supportive everyone is and the vibrant feeling we have here.”

Dr. Ange Wellman is accepting new patients. The Wellman Clinic abides by all health and safety regulations outlined by Health Canada, Ontario Health and the Government of Ontario. The clinic features a buzz-in security system so patients can feel comfortable knowing exposure to other patients is limited and controlled.
