Quality, Value, and Design Secure an International Market

Located on Neal Drive in southeast Peterborough, Peterboro Matboards is a recognized world leader in the manufacture of exceptional quality matboards that enhance works of art and photograph presentations. While the company’s history dates back to 1902 when it opened as Turner Bros. Limited, 2001 saw the company, then Peterboro Cardboards, purchased by CEO and president Alan Yaffe.

With a workforce of about 25 employees and sales agents based in the GTA and the United States, Peterboro Matboards serves an international market, catering to the needs of museums, galleries, and picture frame distributors.

Yaffe’s son and company operations manager Steve Sprott says Peterboro Matboard’s one-time standing as “kind of an underdog in the industry” is well in the rear-view mirror. “We’re in a lot of markets that we didn’t service before, and there’s still a lot of market share for us to gain,” he says.

Sprott adds that in terms of getting product quickly in the hands of customers – be it a skid load of up to 1,200 matboards or a shipping bin destined for overseas customers – the company’s proximity to a major transportation route that connects to Toronto is huge.

Meanwhile, being environmentally responsible has been, and remains, a focus. Sprott notes that, unlike competitors that use polyvinyl acetate glue in the lamination process, Peterboro Matboards has developed and uses a water-soluble starch-based glue that is wholly biodegradable. As well, notes Sprott, the company works with FSC-certified mills whose emissions are subject to tight controls, and reforestation is an identified priority.

Most telling of the company’s success, says Sprott, is its very low employee turnover rate – “People come here and stay here,” he says. “We work in such a creative environment here. What you may have hanging on your wall represents a lot of dedication and hard work here.”
